Former Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration joins ADR Chambers

ADR Chambers is extremely pleased to welcome Bette Shifman as Executive Director of ADR Chambers and Banking Ombuds for the ADR Chambers Banking Ombuds Office.

Prior to joining the staff of ADR Chambers, Bette served as Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and as Senior Legal Officer at the International Court of Justice. With over thirty years of experience in international law and dispute resolution, including arbitration, mediation, and fact-finding, in areas ranging from employee, construction and commercial matters to investor-state, international boundary, and law of the sea disputes, Bette’s responsibilities will include intake and administration of arbitration, and overseeing and providing ombuds services for banking disputes.

Bette is a U.S.- trained lawyer and has practiced with law firms in New York and Amsterdam. She is also a published author on international dispute resolution, and former editor of the Journal of International Arbitration. She has taught dispute resolution and set up internal dispute resolution mechanisms for inter-governmental organizations. Bette is an Accredited Mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in London, UK, and was a Registered Mediator with the Netherlands Mediation Institute (NMI). She received her ombuds training from the International Ombudsman Association, and also has extensive experience and expertise in digital information management, including a recent Master’s degree in information science from the University of Michigan School of Information.
